Met this dog on the way back to Iowa. We were driving in North Dakota and saw two dogs approach the highway. We were nervous the semi in front of us would hit them but they didn't. Then we slowed down, and the dogs crossed the highway and approached our car. They started barking at us and would not continue running off into the field. We put them in the back of the truck and decided to see if anyone in nearby properties knew them. They were obviously trained (jumped right into the truck) and wore collars. Went to a farm where an older woman lived alone. She walked with a cane and struggled to get to the door all to tell us that no, these weren't her dogs and she didn't know where they belonged. Meanwhile one had jumped out of the truck and was investigating the pen of sheep adjacent to the farm house. To take them to the closest town or keeping searching for their homes? We opted for the field where we'd seen them running. Maybe their owners were nearby and looking for them. Maybe their owner drove a red truck and they always greeted the car when he returned from work for the day. We drove to a dirt road and opened the back of the truck. The dogs jumped out but only circled the truck as we tried to drive away. They wanted to play. Finally we waited in the truck and waited until they were sniffing something a little further off in the snow. Then we drove back to the main highway and the dogs dashed behind us, certainly no better off and likely in a worse place than we'd found them.
